What is a DS_STORE file?
Files with the .DS_STORE extension contain Mac OS X system information concerning preferences of displaying catalog windows: their location, size, layout, and the sorting and displaying of icons – in a list, using miniatures or columns.
Since the files contain information only relevant to the desktop of the system in a graphical sense, they are, by default, not displayed in the catalog listing. Their deletion only implies a return to the default settings for the particular catalog in the given file explorer.

How to open DS_STORE files
If you cannot open the DS_STORE file on your computer - there may be several reasons. The first and most important reason (the most common) is the lack of a suitable software that supports DS_STORE among those that are installed on your device.
A very simple way to solve this problem is to find and download the appropriate application. The first part of the task has already been done – the software supporting the DS_STORE file can be found in the table. Now just download and install the appropriate application.
Possible problems with the DS_STORE format files
The inability to open and operate the DS_STORE file does not necessarily mean that you do not have an appropriate software installed on your computer. The crew 2 download. There may be other problems that also block our ability to operate the Macintosh OS X Folder Information Format file. Below is a list of possible problems.
- Corruption of a DS_STORE file which is being opened
- Incorrect links to the DS_STORE file in registry entries.
- Accidental deletion of the description of the DS_STORE from the Windows registry
- Incomplete installation of an application that supports the DS_STORE format
- The DS_STORE file which is being opened is infected with an undesirable malware.
- The computer does not have enough hardware resources to cope with the opening of the DS_STORE file.
- Drivers of equipment used by the computer to open a DS_STORE file are out of date.
If you are sure that all of these reasons do not exist in your case (or have already been eliminated), the DS_STORE file should operate with your programs without any problem. If the problem with the DS_STORE file has not been solved, it may be due to the fact that in this case there is also another rare problem with the DS_STORE file. How to associate the file with an installed software?
If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.DS_STORE) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected DS_STORE file. From the drop-down menu select 'Choose default program', then click 'Browse' and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the DS_STORE file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.

Is there one way to open unknown files?
Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. DS_STORE) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.
Changing the default applications that opens when opening a file in Mac OS X is a definite must know, and can save you time as well as a headache.
Maybe you’ve downloaded a new app that you want to set as the default, or opening a picture could default to an app that takes a long time to load, such as Photoshop.
Change Default Application by Extension
For this example I’ll change default video player from QuickTime to MPlayerX. Unfortunately there is no way to just set MPlayerX to just be the default player for all video files and their respective extensions. It has to be done, extension by extension.
First thing you’re going to want to do is find a file that has the extension that you want to change the default application for.
All you need to do to change the default application is:
- Right-click (control-click) on a file with the extension that you are wanting to change.
- Select “Get Info”
- Located “Open with:”
- Choose your desired default application.
Now a choice, do you want to change the file association for just this file, or do you want to change the file association for all files with this extensions?
- To apply it across all files with that extension make sure you click “Change All…”

Tips to make the process simpler
You may be thinking that the above is tedious, and truthfully it is. I’d like to see a better way of managing the default application, however until then here are some:
More Tips:
By default on Mac common filename extensions are hidden in Finder. To show all filename extensions:
- Open Finder
- From the menu bar select Finder -> Preferences
- Click the “Advanced” tab
- Enable “Show all filename extensions”

Even after you’ve changed the default application that opens you can still override the setting and choose another app.
- Right-click file
- Choose “Open With”
- This doesn’t change the default.
- Do you have duplicate entries? Remove Duplicate Open With (right-click) entries in OS X
Your desired app not listed?
Mac Os Default Applications
- If your desired app isn’t listed in the “Get Info” window, then choose “Other…”
- Navigate to the applications location (usually the Applications folder) and select it.
- Click Add.
Even More Tips:
Find a new (or better) application by file extension.
- Right-click file -> Get info -> and select “Open with:”
- Select App Store
- This will show application in the Mac App Store that can be used with that specific extension.
- It’s a great way to find new and sometimes better applications.
Not all applications require these methods.
- Some apps are awesome enough to give you the choice of which extensions you want them to be associated with by default. If you want to set a new app to be the default, always check to preferences first.
